How to use the image converter
- Click "Choose an image" and select any image file from your device.
- Pick the target format from the drop-down: PNG, JPEG or WebP.
- Set the quality slider if you chose JPEG or WebP.
- Click "Convert Image", then download the converted file.
Which format should you choose?
- PNG — lossless and supports transparency. Best for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges.
- JPEG — small files with no transparency. Best for photographs and photos destined for the web.
- WebP — a modern format that is smaller than JPEG and PNG at similar quality. Great for websites, but some older browsers cannot display it.
Why convert formats?
Different platforms favour different formats. A logo saved as JPEG gets a white box behind it, while PNG keeps the background transparent. A photo saved as PNG can be five times larger than the same image as JPEG. Converting to the right format keeps files small and compatible with the apps you use.
A note on WebP support
WebP output depends on your browser. Most modern browsers support it, but if yours does not, the tool will tell you and you can choose PNG or JPEG instead.
Lossless and lossy formats explained
PNG is lossless, meaning every pixel is preserved exactly when you convert to it. JPEG and WebP are lossy, meaning they trade a little detail for a much smaller file. When you convert a PNG to JPEG, the transparent background is flattened to white and some fine detail may be discarded depending on the quality setting.
Converting photographs
Photographs almost always work best as JPEG or WebP, because these formats compress smooth colour gradients very efficiently. A photo saved as PNG can be several times larger with no visible benefit. Convert your photos to JPEG for maximum compatibility or WebP for the smallest file size.
Converting graphics and logos
Graphics with flat colours, sharp edges or transparency are best kept as PNG. Converting them to JPEG will blur edges and add a white or black background where the transparency used to be. Use PNG for logos, icons and screenshots.
