What the tool reports

Text statistics returns five figures for any block of text: total characters, words, sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time. Paste or type into the input box, press Convert, and every figure is recalculated from the current input. The page runs the counting in JavaScript inside the browser, so nothing is uploaded and the tool still works on a slow connection or with a document you would rather not send anywhere.

The figures are deliberately simple and reproducible. Characters are the length of the raw string, so spaces, tabs, line breaks and punctuation are all included. Words are counted by splitting the trimmed text on runs of whitespace, which means a double space between two words does not inflate the total the way a naive per-character counter would. If you only need a running total while you type, the word counter is the lighter option.

How sentences and paragraphs are counted

Sentences are counted from groups of terminal punctuation: any run of full stops, question marks or exclamation marks closes a sentence. That approach is fast and works well for ordinary prose, but it has no concept of an abbreviation, so a line containing Dr. Smith is read as two sentences. Paragraphs are split on blank lines only. A block with single line breaks inside it counts as one paragraph, even when it looks like several on screen.

Reading time divides the word count by 200 words per minute and rounds up. Because of the rounding, every non-empty text shorter than 200 words returns one minute, which is why a two-line note and a four-paragraph article can both show the same estimate.

Worked example

A short sample makes the behaviour concrete. Paste the two sentences The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. It was fast. and the tool reports 57 characters, 12 words, 2 sentences, 1 paragraph and a reading time of about 1 minute. The character total includes the full stop and the space between the two sentences; the word total is twelve because the text splits into twelve whitespace-separated chunks; the reading time rounds up from roughly 0.06 minutes.

Now insert a blank line between the two sentences and convert again. The paragraph count becomes two, the character count rises by one for the extra line break, and the sentence and word counts stay exactly where they were. That is the clearest way to see which parts of the output depend on layout and which depend only on the words themselves.

Where the figures differ from other tools

Word processors disagree with each other, and with this page, at the edges. Some count hyphenated compounds as one word and some as two; some treat a dash surrounded by spaces as a word break and some do not; most include footnotes and headers that a plain-text paste never contained. The sentence count here is punctuation-based rather than grammatical, so bullet lists and headings without full stops are undercounted, while abbreviations and decimal points can push the count too high.

If you need per-word frequencies rather than totals, the word frequency counter ranks each word separately. If you are checking how often a phrase appears relative to the whole document, the keyword density checker handles that ratio. Text statistics is the quick sanity check: it reports no syllable counts, no grade level and no character count excluding spaces.

Frequently asked questions

No. The character figure is the full length of the string, so spaces, tabs, line breaks and punctuation are included. To get a letters-only figure, clean the text first and compare the two totals.
Paragraphs are split on blank lines, not single line breaks. Insert an empty line between blocks and the count will rise to match what you see.
Any run of full stops, question marks or exclamation marks ends a sentence. Abbreviations such as Dr. or e.g. therefore add sentences that a reader would not count.
No. The counting runs locally in the page, so the input stays in your browser and the tool works offline once loaded.
